The stunning area known as the Costa Maya is located on the lower third of the Yucatan peninsula on the sparkling blue Caribbean Sea. Known for its pristine white sandy beaches, Costa Maya is a tropical paradise with fauna and flora including abundant coconut palm trees.
This area of the Caribbean is the home of the Mesoamerican Reef, the world’s second largest barrier reef. As a diver’s and snorkeler’s paradise, the Reef is home to five hundred species of fish and one of the largest colonies of manatees on the planet. Once or twice per year, giant sea turtles waddle onto the beach in search of premier nesting sites.
Centered in the Costa Maya is the small town of Mahahual. Once a sleepy fishing village, Mahahual has grown into a small resort town with charming hotels and a wide range of dining and shopping opportunities, although we boast that there are no fast foods chains! Mahahual is also the home to the cruise ship port, Costa Maya, which brings in ships during the day in the winter season. New to town is the Lost Mayan World Water Park, a Mayan themed adventure water park that includes a range of water and zipline activities. If fishing is your desire then Mahahual is your dream come true with deep sea fishing, spear fishing and spectacular bone fishing.
Once the center of the Mayan Empire, the Yucatan is home to dozens of Mayan ruins throughout the Peninsula. The majority of residents of Mahahual are of Mayan decent, a gentle and kind people. Many ex-pats from the U.S., Canada, Italy, Spain and Germany call Mahahual home giving the community a bit of an international flare.
